Joining the Gaps

The Waverley Rail Trail (http://www.monash.vic.gov.au/recreation/bike.htm#waverley) is a set of shared paths loosely following some sections of the Glen Waverley railway line, common with many of the cycling routes in Melbourne it will merrily divert onto roads or footpaths but even where it crosses other cycling routes as below the connectivity is awful.

Note the small sign on the path to the left ending the shared zone and legally obliging cyclists to dismount and walk, for the 10 metres before that footpath joins onto Lawrence Road with its on-road cycling lanes. Inconsistent design at its best.
