Collins Street has seen its bicycle lanes lose their road markings while the distinctive city kerbs have been scrubbed of the green surface treatment. Together it would appear that this is not a legal bicycle lane, but we can record here the horrors of what might have been Melbourne’s narrowest bicycle lane ever.
From kerb to the dividing line this lane provides just 480mm, less than the width of my shoulders, or less than a third of the Austroads desirable width. These sorts of confusing road markings only lead to more contention between cyclists and drivers and need to be completely eliminated.
Thanks to Mr M for this tipoff, if you know of narrower lanes please leave a comment so they can be captured.
