The Boy Who Cried Wolf is a particularly well known fable through its enduring and simple message, though it appears to have been lost amongst the push to avoid liability. As sometimes seen in dense cities where driveways exit across footpaths, a flashing light was installed at the gates of this worksite (above the sign “GATE”) with a warning to pedestrians that vehicles are entering.
However, while such a flashing light would usually be triggered by vehicles approaching the driveway instead these warning lights are left running endlessly while the site is occupied. Captured here flashing merrily away while there are no vehicles in sight.
Regular users of this path will quickly recognise that the warning is scaremongering and then simply ignore the message from then on, leaving it just another distraction in the visually busy environment. Safety messages need to be clear and reliable not just layers of window dressing to shift blame.
